From the New Town area of the city, Rakesh Singh has been held for his alleged involvement in the drug seizure case including another party leader Parmela Goswami, the police said on Sunday.
The accused who is around 42-year-old and a resident of the New Alipore area in the city is a close associate of Rakesh Singh and has also played a significant role in the drug smuggling case, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.
The accused has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, according to the officer.
The officer said that the person was arrested on Saturday.
Along with this, seven other persons have been held so far in connection with the case.
State secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Pamela Goswami and two of her friends were arrested last month after 90 gm cocaine was seized from the car in which they were traveling in the New Alipore area.
Following her proclamations that she was framed, state committee member of Bharatiya Janata Party’s West Bengal unit Rakesh Singh and another person who was traveling with him were arrested by the police from Galsi in Purba Bardhaman district, the police officer claimed.
Last week, another close associate of Rakesh Singh was arrested from Orphangunj Road in the city’s port area in connection with this case.
