Remember Pollachi abuse case: Stalin attacks PM Modi over ‘culture of insulting women’ remark

DMK leader MK Stalin invoked the Pollachi sexual abuse case while hitting back at PM Narendra Modi who said that insulting women is a part of DMK and Congress’s culture.

While referring to A Raja’s remarks on CM Palaniswami, PM Modi said at a rally in Dharapuram on Tuesday, “I want to tell Congress and DMK, please control your party leaders.”

PM Modi’s remarks came after DMK leader Dindigul Leoni’s made a controversial remark on women’s hips and DMK MP A Raja compared CM Palaniswami’s political career to that of a premature baby born in an illegitimate manner.

Replying to PM Modi, MK Stalin who was campaigning at Tenkasi, questioned about the Pollachi sexual abuse and harassment case involving a woman IPS officer.

“PM Modi has raised an allegation that there won’t be any safety for women if DMK and Congress come to power. I wish to ask you a humble question. Pollachi is just 70 km away from Dharapuram, where you spoke. Don’t you know what happened there? If you don’t, you are unfit to be a PM,” alleged Stalin.

“Who harassed a woman SP? It was not a rowdy or a goonda, it was the Special DGP, a man who was in-charge of law and order. That officer was close to the CM. Weren’t all this information given to you? And you are raising allegations against DMK, Congress,” questioned Stalin.

PM Modi said on Tuesday that it was Congress and DMK’s culture to insult women and when DMK’s Dindigul Leoni and ‘young crown prince’ (Udhayanidhi Stalin) made ‘horrible’ remarks against women, nothing was done by that party to stop them.

Pollachi is a town in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. The Pollachi sexual assault case refers to an incident that happened on February 12, 2019. A 19-year-old college student was sexually assaulted by three to four men in a moving vehicle.

The accused shot a video of the assault and snatched a gold chain that the victim was wearing before dumping her in the middle of a road as she screamed and cried at the top of her voice. The accused used the video to blackmail her multiple times before she narrated the incident to her family.

The accused were identified as Sabarirajan alias Riswandh, Thirunavukkarasu, Satish and Vasanthkumar.

After the victim shared her ordeal with the family, her brother tracked down two of the accused, seized two of their phones and handed them and evidence to the Pollachi police. They actually unearthed a sexual violence and extortion racket.

After the police took over the case, they found that the four were part of a bigger racket. More mobile phones were seized from them. The mobile phones had explicit videos of women, who had possibly been exploited and blackmailed.

Some of those videos leaked to social media platforms and widely circulated. The case is still under investigation with some reports claiming that number of women who became a victim of this extortion racket could be in the range of 50-200. At least six different women were identified as victims in 2019 from the videos that went into circulation, reports said.

The Pollachi sexual assault and extortion case took a political angle after brother of the victim was assaulted reportedly by the ‘friends’ of the accused whom he had tracked down before lodging complaint with the police. The assault on victim’s brother took place on February 24, 2019.

One of those assaulting him was a member of Tamil Nadu’s ruling party, AIADMK. He went by the name, ‘Bar’ Nagraj. The AIADMK expelled him from the party later.

A couple of weeks later, a Tamil magazine, Nakkeeran published reports claiming that the Pollachi sexual assault and extortion racket had the backing of senior AIADMK leaders.

Name of Tamil Nadu Deputy Speaker Pollachi V Jayaraman cropped up in reports. Pollachi Jayaraman is an MLA from Pollachi Assembly constituency. Pollachi Jayaraman is seeking his fourth term from Pollachi seat in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly election.
