“Two-child policy is the only way to eradicate poverty and illiteracy in the Muslim community in the state”, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said.
Sarma told news agency ANI on Tuesday that, “it is for the welfare of the minority community and I don’t think there is any opposition from them. He also said that all Assam Minority Students’ Union met him twice last month and openly welcomed (the 2-child proposal), conceding that Muslims in Assam need population control measures.
While referring to the new population norms in Assam, he said that he is going to meet Muslim intellectuals in July, and is sure they will support state government’s policy.
CM Sarma said that he has invited 150 Muslim intellectuals to meet him on July 4. He has also planned to hold discussions with various socio-political organizations representing the community. Sarma had previously said that his government was planning to introduce a population policy with a two-child norm, and families grasping to it can use benefits under certain schemes.
