Group of 200 farmers gathered near Jantar Mantar in central Delhi to protest against the three farm laws as the monsoon season of parliament was underway. The protest was to be started around 11am but farmers reached the venue around 12:25pm only and it is expected to go on around 5:00pm. As per permission granted by lieutenant governor of Delhi protest can go till august 9th but Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) an umbrella body of farmer union said that their protest would continue till the end of the Monsoon session of Parliament i.e. till August 13th.
During these hard-times where there is fear of third wave of COVID approaching SKM has been asked to an undertaking that all COVID norms would be followed and the stir would be peaceful. To avoid any unwelcoming and unpleasant incidents Adhaar card were checked and in any case scenario if the protest gets out of hands water cannon and metal-detector gates have been deployed at the site.
This is the first time since tractor rally protest happened on January 26th where there was clash between farmers and police after farmers rode over the police barricades, that authorities have granted their permission to the protesting farmer unions to hold a demonstration in the city.
In response to this protest the agricultural minister Shri Narendra Singh Tomar said “he ready and willing to take to farmers”.
