Police are in search for a 27-year-old woman who is accused of setting herself as an advocate and practicing in Kerala’s Alappuzha sans proper qualification.
The accuse named Sessy Xavier of Ramankary, had been practicing as a lawyer in Alappuzha for around two-and-a-half years, without holding the LLB degree and registering with the State Bar Council. Reports say that Xavier, earlier, did an internship with a lawyer by pretending to be a final-year law student.
Sessy in March 2019 secured the Aleppey Bar Association’s membership by submitting the enrollment number of a Thiruvananthapuram-based advocate and generated certificates. This year, she even contested the Bar Association Election and was elected to the post of the association’s librarian.
Earlier this month the Bar Association got a letter from an anonymous person alleging she was not a lawyer. Successive inquiries revealed that she had provided the roll number of another advocate. Following this, she was figured out as a member of the association and the matter was reported to the district judge. She failed to explain the association.
The association lodged a police complaint against Xavier in connection with this matter. Based on the complaint, police registered a case against her under relevant sections. On July 22 Sessy tried to surrender in the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court, thinking that she would get bail. However, when she learned that the police have added non-bailable charges in the FIR against her she escaped. Since then she has been on the run and police are making efforts to trace her.
