Supreme Court granted bail to Azam Khan, a member of the Samajwadi Party, and his son, Mohammad Abdullah Azam Khan

In a forgery case, the Supreme Court granted bail to Samajwadi Party leader and Rampur constituency MP Azam Khan and his son Mohammad Abdullah Azam Khan on Tuesday. The two were accused of falsifying Abdullah’s age on his birth certificate in order for him to run in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections.

The bail was granted on an appeal against a judgement issued by the Allahabad High Court on November 26, 2020, which denied bail to the father-son combo based on apprehensions of witness tampering.

During the High Court appeal, the judge denied the bail observing, “With regard to the accused persons’ position and status, the repeat of the offences, and the pervasive influence that applicants wield in various departments of the State, there is a reasonable apprehension of witnesses being influenced and danger to the course of justice being thwarted.” Azam Khan stands accused under the Indian Penal Code’s Sections 420, 467, 468, 471, and 120B, while Abdullah stands accused under the IPC’s Sections 420, 467, 468, 471, and Section 12(1A) Passport Act, 1967.
