Counsel for JNU student Sharjeel Imam ended his arguments on Monday in the bail petition filed by Imam in a sedition case related to the February 2020 Delhi unrest.
Tanveer Ahmed Mir, appearing before Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, further stated that Imam had just called for protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in his lectures, which cannot be considered sedition in a democratic country.
Mir claimed that Imam had remarked in his talks, “Humlogo ko pathar nahi maarne; humlogo ko chot nahi pahuchani.. humlogon ko kewal road block karna hai taaki government jo nahi maan rahi hai wo maanne ko tayiyar ho jaye”
According to the chargesheet filed by the Delhi police in the conspiracy case, Imam was the “mastermind” of the Shaheen Bagh roadblock. It has also been claimed that on the late afternoon of December 15, 2019, Imam, with the assistance of Jamia student Arshad Warsi and his associates, began a 24×7 permanent road block (chakka jam) of road number 13, Kalindi Kunj Road at Shaheen Bagh.
Mir went on to say, “We are proud of our unity, not majoritarianism.”
“A society’s critical elements are required. If criticism dies, so will civilization. Finally, it is in Your Honour’s hands to preserve the Constitution; to uphold justice in a democracy ” he continued. Now the matter will be further heard on 1st September 2021.
