After the retirement of Justice R.F Nariman who was the presiding chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Service Committee. The name of Justice Khanwilkar has been nominated for the same.
As a result, Justice Khanwilkar has been nominated to the position in exercise of the authority given by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, read with Rule 10 of the National Legal Services Authority Rules, 1995.
On Wednesday, August 25, 2021, a notification was made in this regard. The Legal Service Authorities aim to provide free and competent legal services to the weaker sections of society in order to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen due to economic or other disabilities, and to organise Lok Adalats in order to ensure that the legal system operates in a way that promotes justice on an equal opportunity basis. There target is to advocate for a more inclusive judicial system in order to provide fair and meaningful justice to the underprivileged and disadvantaged sectors.
