Amid the discussions all over the country about the strength, or rather weakness of the Indian opposition that have been in highlights for quite some time now, there has been an interesting turn of events recently. While the speculations of major political parties in the opposition getting together to overthrow the BJP government in the next elections were the talk of the town, Congress and TMC have apparently decided to go against the same. In Jaago Bangla, the Trinamool Congress mouthpiece, a front-page article titled ‘Rahul could not, Mamata is the Opposition Face’ has fathomably triggered speculations that in the 2024 national elections, Mamata Banerjee may very well fight for the Prime Ministerial position against PM Modi.
The article published reportedly accepted that although an opposition without the Congress party is hard to imagine, but with Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial candidate, it hasn’t worked out. “We will campaign all over the country with the popular leader Mamata Banerjee as the face of the opposition”, it further said. The West Bengal Congress has made known its displeasure over the same with State Unit Chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury pointing out that such kinds of moves can be terminal for the Opposition unity. Neither Mamata Banerjee nor Rahul Gandhi has made any official statement on the issue yet.
