Captain Amarinder Singh, the 15th Chief Minister of the Punjab State and a veteran Politician from the Indian National Congress Pary have stepped down from the position of CM of the state on Saturday, 18th September, 2021. Thereby, the Indian National Congress Party have named Mr Chiranjit Singh Channi as the new Chief Minister of the state of Punjab, a day after Captain’s resignation.
On the resignation from the position of Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh stated in his own words that his decision was clearly “not based on full understanding of the national imperatives of Punjab and its key concerns”. On the other hand, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Mr Ashok Gehlot said that he hoped that Mr Singh being a respected leader of the party will not take any step that will hamper the party’s interest. Taking to Twitter, Mr Gehlot said “I hope that he will continue to work keeping the interest of the party ahead”, the Rajasthan CM added.
The suspense and an atmosphere of crisis ultimately ended with the naming of Chiranjit Singh Channi as the new Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab. Prior getting the position Chief Minister, he was the Technical Educational and Industrial Training Minister in the Amarinder Singh’s cabinet and also having a great experience of being a leader of opposition in the Punjab state assembly during the Prakash Singh Badal led Akali-BJP government.
After the designation of the name made for the new Chief Minister, the social media got filled with best wishes from the veteran policians from all over India. Rahul Gandhi, one of the top leader of the Congress Party has congratulated Mr Channi for the ‘new responsibility’ whereby, he said through his Twitter handle, “Congratulations to Shri Charanjit Singh Channi Ji for the new responsibility. We must continue to fulfill the promises made to the people of Punjab. Their trust is of paramount importance”. Former CM Captain Amarinder Singh also extended best wishes to his successor whereby, he said through his social media handle, “My best wishes to Charanjit Singh Channi. I hope he’s able to keep the border state of Punjab safe and protect our people from the growing security threat from across the border”.
Moreover, many leaders and veteran politicians have appreciated the decision made by the Congress high Command for giving chance to a Dalit personality for becoming the Chief Minister of the state. On the other hand, many political scientist made a view that this step have been taken by the party in a very planned manner whereby, their main motive is to gain the confidence over the Dalit community keeping in view the forth-coming state assembly election. Mr Chiranjit Singh Channu, the designate CM is now all set to take oath in order to join the office of CM on Monday (20th September, 2021) and the oath will be administered by Governor of the state Mr Banwarilal Purohit.
