The West Bengal Governor, Mr Jagdeep Dhankar has withdrawn the power of Assembly speaker Mr Biman Banerjee to administer the oath of office to the member of the state legislature. The officials on Monday said that this is the first time any Bengal Governor has taken such a huge step, which is likely to raise the tension between Mr Dhankar and the speaker.
The State Assembly officials said in his statement, “A note from Raj Bhawan reached the office of the speaker a few days before the assembly by-poll to Kolkata’s Bhabanipur and two seats in Murshidabad district on Sunday. The letter cited Section 188 of the Constitution, which empowers the governor to administer the oath”.
To secure the Chief Ministerial seat of the state of West Bengal, Ms Mamata Banerjee won the bypoll election from the Bhabanipur constituency by a record margin as per the result declared on Sunday. Thereby, she needs a formal sworn-in procedure as a member of the State Assembly. The Trinamool Congress leaders said that she wants the formalities to be completed before the Durga Puja festivals.
