The targeted killing of civilians, in particular people of the Kashmir Valley’s minority communities, by insurgents is focused on building an atmosphere of terror and hindering communal harmony, chief Dilbag Singh of Jammu and Kashmir Police said. He also added that the incidents targeting civilians in Kashmir over the past couple of days are barbaric. Innocent people working for their livelihood and society are being targeted. This is an attempt to shape an environment of constant fear and to give it a communal turn to damage the communal harmony in Kashmir.

The Director-General of Police (DGP) was informing the reporters at Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School at Sangam, Eidgah, the site of the crime, where two teachers were shot dead by militants earlier in the day.

The militants attacked the teachers, including a woman, around 11:15 am on Thursday. The victims have been identified as Supinder Kour from Alochi Bagh and Deepak Chand, a resident of Jammu. They worked as teachers at the Government Boys’ School, Sangam.

The death of the teachers took the civilian casualties tally over the last five days to seven. Four of the victims were from the valley’s minority communities. Six were killed in the city.

Earlier this week, three civilians were shot dead by militants within two hours in separate incidents in the Srinagar and Bandipora districts of Jammu and Kashmir. One of them identified as Makhan Lal Bindroo, owner of a popular pharmacy store in Srinagar.

On Saturday, militants shot two other civilians, identified as Majid Ahmad Gojri, a resident of Chattabal Srinagar who was shot dead on spot and Mohammad Shafi Dar, a resident of Batamaloo, who succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

Dilbag Singh claimed those targeting humanity, brotherhood, and the local ethos and values will be unmasked soon. Assuring the general public he said that the force regrets the back-to-back attacks in which common people have been killed and they are working on previous cases and the Srinagar Police has got many leads. He also promised that soon the people behind such barbaric attacks will be behind the bars.

Propounding that the assault was an attempt to defame the Islam community of Kashmir, the DCP said that the insurgents are taking action on the orders of Pakistan to impede the way of peace in the Valley. Reportedly Dilbag Singh declared this attack as an attempt to defame Muslims of Kashmir, a conspiracy to target those who have come here to earn their livelihood. He called it a stratagem to damage the tradition of communal harmony and brotherhood in Kashmir.
