Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been making headlines constantly since a few days now. The leader, who was detained last week on her way to visit the families of Lakhmipur violence victims, is now seen in a viral video sweeping floors. In the video, Gandhi is seen with a broom cleaning the floor of a Valmiki temple, situated in a Dalit colony in Lucknow city.
This was done in rebuttal to Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister and BJP leader Yogi Adityanath’s earlier criticism of Vadra for sweeping the floor while she was detained. He had remarked that people expect and want them to be suitable for this only.
The female opposition leader has called the broom a symbol of ‘self-respect’, responding to Adityanath’s statement, which she believes to be “anti-dalit”. After the new video was posted on twitter, UP Cabinet Minister Nand Gopal Gupta has reacted to it by terming it all a “drama”, adding that Priyanka had done “various dramas in 2019 elections also”.
“The Chief Minister has insulted the women, Dalits and workers of this country and I visited the Valmiki mandir and swept there to change his mindset”, Vadra has been quoted as saying.
Notably, Assam CM Himant Biswa Sarma has also taken a dig at her and remarked that sweeping the floor is a daily chore in every Indian household, indicating that there is nothing significant about the Congress leader doing so.
